It was a rare opportunity to photograph a occupied bear den in Yellowstone National Park. The mother bear had dug the den in late October of 2021. The two cubs were 10 months old and had spent their entire lives in the small drainage of Elk Creek. This new den was not very deep and with the mid-day suns low angle, you could see the bears just inside. Most of the time it was just the rear ends visible but occasionally I could see one or more of their heads. On warm days they would venture out to drag some fresh bedding back to the den. They walked like they were drunk, staggering and falling. They left the den in April after almost 6 months waiting for spring.
